Business Unit Information
Parks develops and maintains parks, open space, pathways and cemeteries; manages The City’s urban forest; and acts as steward of the natural environment, responsible for its protection, preservation, and environmental education.
Parks has an opportunity for a highly motivated and experienced marketing professional to fill the role of Marketing Advisor for the Environmental Education & Initiatives (E&EI) division. The E&EI division is responsible for the development and delivery of environmental education programs, initiatives and services for Parks. E&EI is also responsible for the management of daily activities at facilities offering environmental programs and services (i.e. Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, Reader Rock Garden, Ralph Klein Park, Devonian Gardens, cultural landscape sites). E&EI manages a volunteer program with approximately 9,000 volunteers to assist in the delivery of environmental education initiatives and services on an annual basis.
Reporting to the Parks Communications Team Supervisor and working closely with the E&EI Lead, the Marketing Advisor will offer strategic advice and consultation to E&EI and other areas of Parks. The Marketing Advisor will facilitate the direction of key marketing, communications and media strategies and implement the corresponding tactics, and through evaluation ensure that actions undertaken contributes to stated objectives.
Client consultation, providing strategic advice and partnering with clients to achieve client goals using external facing channels and traditional and non-traditional media.
Marketing planning, project management; marketing and media coverage reports data analysis and interpretation.
Media relations, assist and support Parks’ social media presence, evaluate and use emerging technologies and strategies to promote Parks/E&EI’s messages to the media and directly to the public.
The successful applicant must possess a minimum of a diploma (equivalent to two-three years full time study) in a related field such as Commerce, Marketing, Advertising or Business plus five or more years of progressive experience. In addition, the individual must have excellent skills in communication, strategic and creative thinking, flexibility, political sensitivity, negotiation and developing partnership skills. Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint, etc.), along with excellent organization and time management skills are required. The successful applicant will possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License or provincial equivalent and will be required to use their personal vehicle for business use. Designations such as ABC (Accredited Business Communicator), APR (Accredited in Public Relations), and CAAP (Communications & Advertising Accredited Professional) are considered assets, as are knowledge and experience with the web, social media, community-based social marketing, and a strong understanding of marketing collateral and print production.
