The number of forest fires across the province and in the Fort McMurray area, is down dramatically from this time last year.
The Forest Protection officer for the Athabasca Forest says spring has been slow arriving and this may account for the drop in the number of forest fires.
“There have been 63 fires in Alberta so far, compared to 108 by this time last year,” says Gary Dakin.
Dakin says there has only been one fire this year in the Athabasca Forest. It occured (sic) north of Fort McMurray in the Fort Chipewyan district.
“It was a small fire which we believe was a hold-over from last year.”
